Specialist recruitment for UK surface engineering — built from the knowledge environment of the EMC Surface Technologies group and its finishing businesses.

Origin

This started in an operating group — not a recruitment agency.

Surface Talent is a sister business of the EMC Surface Technologies group (opens in a new tab). EMC invests in and develops surface-engineering businesses that own and run finishing plants — anodising, electroplating and related processes among them.

We are an external specialist recruitment company — not EMC’s internal talent team. The proximity is the point: briefs, screening and shortlists are shaped by how those plants actually work.

From plant floor to shortlist

How operating proximity becomes recruitment judgement.

One causal chain — not a generic “how we work” strip. Scroll to build it.

  1. 01

    Group plants

EMC portfolio businesses run real finishing operations — chemistry, kit, standards, yield.

  2. 02

    Process knowledge

Substrate, bath, compliance and shift reality enter the brief — not a job-board keyword list.

  3. 03

    Market map

Direct, discreet approaches into the lanes that actually hold the talent.

  4. 04

    Technical screen

Commercial and process screening matched to the real job, not a generic competency grid.

  5. 05

    Shortlist

Typically two to three people we would stand behind for that brief.

  6. 06

    Hire & follow-through

Involvement through offer and structured check-ins across the first 90 days.

The people behind the search

You speak with the people who run the search.

Retained work and confidential career conversations need a named human — not a brand wall. We will not publish synthetic portraits or borrow EMC headquarters biographies for Surface Talent.

Named profiles in progress

We will publish the names, titles and relevant backgrounds of the people who take briefs, run search and represent candidates — with real photography where we have rights. We will not invent a team grid or borrow unrelated group biographies.

Meanwhile, the booking line and inbox reach the people who handle confidential client search and candidate conversations.

What this changes

Proximity shows up in the work.

Brief

Process, substrate, standards and commercial context mapped before the market is opened.

Screen

Technical and commercial questions framed the way a plant would ask them.

Map

Discreet direct approaches — not spray-and-pray advertising as the default.

Represent

Candidates briefed honestly on role truth, level and culture fit.

Shortlist

A short, defended list — typically two to three credible operators.

Aftercare

Structured follow-up through onboarding and the first 90 days — not a drop-off after day one.

Two-sided trust

Hiring side first. Candidate care explicit.

If you’re hiring

Difficult roles. Discreet process.

  • Retained search when the hire warrants it — boards, owners and shareholders included.
  • Off-market approaches by default for senior work; no noisy public ads unless agreed.
  • Shortlists we will defend; involvement through offer and early tenure.
  • Primary next step: brief us on the role.

If you’re considering a move

For the people we represent

  • Conversations are confidential.
  • Your identity and CV are not shared with an employer without your consent.
  • We will not approach your current employer as part of representing you.
  • We will say when a move is not right — not every role is a fit.

Leadership roles we search

Director-level coverage — stated as coverage.

This is the span of senior roles we search across UK surface engineering. It is not a published list of completed mandates. Anonymised outcomes will be added when approved for public use.

  • Managing Director — P&L leadership of a site or business unit
  • Operations Director — multi-site operations, production, improvement
  • Technical Director — process, chemistry, standards, NPD
  • Commercial / Sales Director — pipeline, pricing, key accounts
  • Quality Director — NADCAP, AS9100, ISO, audit leadership
  • GM / Business Unit Lead — site, division or specialist business

For confidential retained search: thorough brief, discreet market mapping, direct approaches, a shortlist of typically two to three people, and structured check-ins through offer, onboarding and the first 90 days.
